Sadky Tract

Prior to the creation of the reserve, there was a state preserve at this place. The Sadky tract overlooks picturesque landscapes of Mount Vedmezhyk (1,736 m) and part of the highest peak of the reserve – Mount Dovbushanka (1,754 m). Here, a five needle tree grows which is 20-25 m high and lives up to 400 years or more. This is the European cedar pine (Pinus cembra) – a symbol of the Gorgany Nature Reserve. European cedar or “kedryna”, as this species is called by the locals, belongs to the relict plants. Cedar stands are a perfect place for the spotted nutcracker (Nucifraga caryocatactes), common crossbill (Loxia curvirostra), capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) and other rare fauna representatives. The tract is also characterized by the thickets of the dwarf mountain pine (Рinus mugo), shrubby crooked trees, also called “zherep”. In some places its height is less than a metre, and in some areas it reaches over human height. The dwarf mountain pine (Рinus mugo) grows on most of the Gorgany peaks and ranges.
